Ten letters (1844-1863) to and from O'Farrell, mostly concerning his work as a surveyor; together with a few miscellaneous documents. Correspondents include John A. Sutter, Washington Bartlett, Thomas O. Larkin, Lilburn W. Boggs, L. Quinton Washington, Mariano G. Vallejo, and Charles White. Documents include a partnership agreement (1848) for a mining business between O'Farrell, Jacob P. Leese, and Samuel Norris; a land grant (Nov. 1849) issued by John W. Geary, Alcalde of San Francisco, to Thomas O. Larkin; a copy of a bill tendered to the city of San Francisco for a survey of lots (undated); a military poll tax receipt (1864); a hand-drawn map of a section of San Francisco; and notes of O'Farrell's survey of Clark's Point, San Francisco.

O'Farrell was appointed Surveyor-General of Alta California in 1843. He is known for surveying and mapping the city of San Francisco.
